Can I request a seat?

In order to ensure InterCity can always offer the most competitive fares, seats are not pre allocated and passengers may select their own seat when they board the vehicle.


Can I take a bike?
Yes, but subject to space availability on the day of travel. There will be an extra charge of NZ$10.00 per bike per sector (rate subject to change), paid direct to the driver.

If I miss the coach, can I use my ticket to get on the next coach?

Your ticket is valid for the service booked and for the date the ticket is valid for. If you miss the service your ticket is valid for your ticket will be non refundable and non transferable.

Is there a toilet on board?
InterCity services stop regularly for toilet breaks however do not have toilets on-board. Some Newmans services do have a toilet on-board.

Can I eat on the coach?
Bottled water and snacks are allowed however hot food and drinks are not for safety reasons.


Will you drop me off at my accommodation?
While we don't drop you right at the door of your accommodation, most stops in major cities are within close proximity to all the main backpackers and hotels.


  • Luggage Allowance - up to two pieces per person weighing a maximum of 25kg each per person
  • Extra luggage may be carried subject to space available at a cost of NZ$10.00 per item per sector payable to the driver.  Please note we cannot guarantee carriage of extra luggage on any specific travel date or service.
  • Please label luggage to your final destination, as we cannot accept responsibility for unlabelled luggage
  • Chilly bins, boxes and bags carrying food and frozen goods will not be accepted for transportation

Carry on Items

  • For safety reasons each customer is limited to one item (max 5kg)
  • If you are travelling with a baby you may take a collapsible pushchair or carrycot and one extra piece of luggage
  • Handbags, umbrellas, walking sticks and other aids are permitted
  • As we are a passenger service, we do not carry freight or unaccompanied luggage
  • Chilly bins, boxes and bags carrying food and frozen goods will not be accepted for transportation

Passenger Ability

Passengers travelling on InterCity and Newmans services must be able to stand unaided when assisted by the driver. Passengers who require somebody to lift them on and off the coach must arrange for this assistance at pick up and drop off points. Drivers are not permitted to participate in carrying of passengers.

Flexi Pass

Travel like a local on New Zealand's largest national network. flexipass gives you all the freedom of the InterCity Coachlines national network, with over 100 daily services, to more than 700 towns, cities and communities nationwide!

It's the trusted network for over a million kiwi's each year and a great way to meet other independent travellers just like you.  

You have the flexibility to jump on and off wherever and whenever you please and you can book and/or change your travel up to 2 hours before departure without incurring penalties, plus passes are valid for 12 months from the date of activation. If you have hours left you can sell on your pass with no penalties.

  • Flexipasses are valid for 12 months from date of purchase.
  • Passes can also be booked through a booking agent. And passengers can book 2 hours prior to travel on coach services.
  • Flexipass is non-refundable once activated.
  • InterCity does not issue any refunds on unused hours.
  • Activation will occur when any travel reservation is made against the pass. There are no exceptions to this.
  • Multiple passengers on a single flexipass: If you have more than one person on a single travel pass then you must travel together throughout your journey. If you intend to travel as a group and need to travel on different dates please purchase individual flexipasses for each person travelling. A NZ$50 admin fee will be charged if you wish to split a pass once purchased. 
  • No hotel pick ups and drop off available for pass holders.
  • You must make your own bookings, either through our free-calling number 0800 222 146 or online at least 12 hours prior to travel time. Interislander ferry bookings must be made at least 26hrs in advance.  
  • For your own security, trips cannot be booked without a password (this is the ANZCRO Booking Reference), so please make sure you have it handy when you book.
  • If you are cancelling a journey, you will receive a full credit of hours for the trip booked provided at least 2 hours notice is given prior to departure.
  • Pass holders may travel on either InterCity, Newmans Coach Lines and Great Sights New Zealand networks in any direction but travelling on the same service more than once in the same day is not permitted.
  • Travel with Great Sights New Zealand applies to coach only. Entrance fees to attractions and services extras such as Milford Cruise can be purchased at the time of booking.
  • Activated flexipasses may be topped up at any time in increments of 1 hour.
    Note: Top up hours are valid only within the existing life of the pass, they do not extend the life of the pass.
  • Flexipass is valid for travel on InterCity, Newmans and GreatSights New Zealand (excluding hotel pickups) operated services only. InterCity makes no guarantee of access to services operated by private operators (services not operated by InterCity, Newmans or GreatSights New Zealand) for flexipass holders. 

    Note: InterCity Group highly recommends that all pass holders carry adequate travel insurance to ensure no loss should they be unable to travel after their pass has been activated.

    Once activated (meaning a sector is booked in), validity begins and a 100% cancellation charge is applicable.
