Transfers: Complimentary shuttle is available from the Grayline and Scenic Coachlines office at 172 Quay Street and  the Skycity Atrium Entrance.

Operating Hours: Open daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm (last entry 4.30pm).


Food Available On site: The Stingray Bay Kiosk stocks light snacks, coffee and other beverages.

If you think you know the sea, think again.  One trip to Kelly Tarlton’s will offer you a fresh perspective on the twin wonders of the ocean deep and the world’s last great wilderness of Antarctica.  Check out our underwater world and get up close with nature’s assassins of the sea along the world’s first curved aquarium tunnel.  Stroll through a replica of Captain Scott’s 1911 Antarctica hut for a glimpse of life 100 years ago in the coldest place on earth.

Help Notes:

  • All participants in the animal adventure activities must complete and sign both the Kelly Tarlton's animal adventure terms and conditions which includes a Statement of Understanding and Assumption of Risk Agreement and the Medical Declaration. If applicable, a doctor's medical clearance must be displayed to the adventure guide. 
  • Bookings are essential for all animal encounters as spaces are limited.
  • Cameras are permitted however the use of flashlights or spotlights in the direction of our animals is prohibited.

Kelly Tarlton's provides an all weather, close up and interactive experience of the southern ocean. Begin with a life size reconstruction of Scott's Antarctic Hut, frozen in time since 1911. Then it's back to the present with a ride on a Snow Cat seeing live King and Gentoo penguins. Next, journey beneath the sea in the original underwater world. See giant stingrays, moray eels, thousands of fish and sharks.

Shark Cage Plunge

Imagine getting face to face with sharks, stingrays and other amazing fish, with nothing but a Perspex bottomed mess wall cage between you!  Prior to taking the plunge you will get a behind-the-scenes peek at Kelly Tarlton's before being briefed for your encounter.  With no diving experience required, this is the easiest, safest and most exciting way to meet these often feared predators of the deep ... all you need is a sense of adventure!

Child Policy:  Children aged 15 years and under must be accompanied into the cage by a parent or guardian.  All  children aged 17 and under must have a parent or guardian sign their consent form.  Minimum height is 1.3 metres.

Session Times: 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 3.00pm daily

Duration:  Approximately 60 to 75 minutes.  We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes before your Animal Adventure begins.

What to Bring: You will be provided with spring suit, booties, mask and snorkel.  Please bring swimwear a towel and wear covered footwear.

Shark Dive Xtreme

For the ultimate adrenaline rush this cage-free dive in the predator tank will see you up close and personal with some 23 sharks, including the Sand Tiger Shark, plus long-tailed stingrays and fish from New Zealand's coastal waters.  You will receive an introduction to scuba diving and pool skills, so no previous scuba experience required.   This is one shark story you'll be happy to tell!

Session Times: 1.30pm to 4.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  1.30pm to 4.00pm  on  Saturday and Sunday 

Duration:  Approximately  2.5 hours.  We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes before your Animal Adventure begins.

What to Bring: You will be provided with a wetsuit and scuba diving equipment which must be worn for the duration of the programme. Please bring swimwear for under your wetsuit, a towel and closed in footwear (no jandals or sandals are permitted 'behind the scenes'). Shower facilities are available.
