The International Antarctic Centre is Christchurch's leading visitor attraction and has twice been judged New Zealand's leading visitor attraction. Located across from Christchurch International Airport in a unique working Antarctic Campus, it offers a fun, exciting and interactive experience of Antarctica. Have fun in real snow and ice, a chilling -5 degrees celsius, the Snow and Ice Experience is great fun for all ages. Be 'exchillarated' in the Antarctic Storm, the Antarctic storm blows every 30 minutes in the Snow and Ice Experience complete with stunning lighting, authentic Antarctic blizzard audio and 40 kilometre winds, the Antarctic Storm will blow you away! See Little Blue penguins in the New Zealand Penguin Encounter. The penguins held here are birds that have been rescued and cared for. Take an exciting outdoor ride on a genuine Antarctic vehicle - the Hagglund. This ride is the only one of its type in the world. It showcases the demanding capabilities of this amazing Antarctic workhorse. Take a cruise down to Antarctica in the new 4D Extreme Theatre, this offers all the thrills and spills of any Antarctic cruise with something unexpected.

Help Notes:

Shuttle Service:The penguin Express shuttle now offers a FREE return non- stop transport option direct to the International Antarctic Centre from Cathedral Square in the central city.  The Penguin Express operates every day of the year from 9am to 5pm daily with pick-ups on the hour from Cathedral Square, returning to the city on the half hour. They are also offering a FREE pick up from Christchurch international Airport for visitors intending to come to the centre.  The shuttle picks up arriving passengers from outside international Arrivals (from the same stop as the city's own Airport Flyer red bus) on the half hour from 8.30am to 4.30pm every day.

Entry & NZ Penguin Encounter

I-guides  - Personalised commentary at your finger tips. i-Guide audio guide tours are available in English, Japanese, Korean, Thai, German, French, Spanish and Mandarin. The English tour is narrated by Sir Edmund Hillary. These hand held audio guides give visitors a comprehensive commentary through the indoor attraction. A special children's tour is also available. The New Zealand Penguin Encounter is New Zealand’s first combined indoor/outdoor penguin viewing area with capacity to hold up to 26 Little Blue penguins. With its centrepiece being a penguin life support area and 80,000 litre pool, the Encounter allows visitors to view Little Blue penguins in a Banks Peninsula natural-themed environment that can be accessed on two levels. The penguins held here are birds that have been rescued and cared for, some since they were chicks. Due to physical disabilities that have left them defenceless, many of them would not have survived on their own back in the wild.

 Child Policy: Child discount available for children 5 to 15 years old.


Emperor & Little Blue Pass

This product includes -Unlimited Entry to the Indoor Attraction, NZ Penguin Encounter & Unlimited Hagglund rides. Hagglund Ride: Climb aboard the amazing Hagglund genuine as-used-in-Antarctica all terrain vehicle, sit back, hold on and experience travelling across rough terrain in this unique and exciting machine! We aim to simulate the same travelling conditions as scientists would experience riding in a Hagglund across the ice pack. This ride is the only one of its type in the world. It showcases the demanding capabilities of the Hagglund ATV. The outdoor adventure course we have built is designed to put the Hagglund through its paces in a fun but very safe environment. Visitors buckle up before they are taken out on an exhilarating ride over mounds, a crevasse, speeding across open ground and through a pond of water to display the Hagglund's amphibious capabilities. The final result is a highly authentic exhilarating ride of approximately 15 minutes in duration, with the driver giving an entertaining commentary.

Child Policy: Child discount available for children 5 to 15 years old.

Departures: Every 30 minutes between 9.35am and 6.55pm daily.

 


NZ Penguin Encounter & Back Stage Pass

The New Zealand Penguin Encounter is New Zealand’s first combined indoor/outdoor penguin viewing area with capacity to hold up to 26 Little Blue penguins. With its centrepiece being a penguin life support area and 80,000 litre pool, the Encounter allows visitors to view Little Blue penguins in a Banks Peninsula natural-themed environment that can be accessed on two levels. The penguins held here are birds that have been rescued and cared for, some since they were chicks. Due to physical disabilities that have left them defenceless, many of them would not have survived on their own back in the wild. When you buy a Penguin Backstage Pass ticket you will experience an additional and exclusive tour of our 'behind the scenes' areas in the NZ Penguin Encounter. The Backstage Pass takes you into the areas not accessible to visitors, hosted by one of our Antarctic Rangers. See how our quarantine area works, learn about penguin feeding and husbandry and take your penguin knowledge to the next level.

Departures: Daily tours at 11.00am, 2.00pm and 3.00pm.
