More than 30 million years ago, the legend of Waitomo began with the creation of limestone at the bottom of the ocean. Now these limestone formations stand as one of New Zealand's most inspiring natural wonders and a must-see destination. 

Location: 2 hours drive south of Auckland and 1 hours drive south of Hamilton. 


Operating Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm. Closed Christmas Day

Food and Beverage: Restaurant and Cafe at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves visitor centre.

Ruakuri, or 'den of dogs' as it literally translates into the English language, was first discovered by local Maori between 400 and 500 years ago and offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences.  Descend a spectacular spiral entrance get up close to glowworms, elaborate cave formations, underground rivers, myths, legends and sacred Maori sites.

Your journey begins at The Long Black Cafe where your guide will meet you. From there you will be transported to Ruakuri Cave, where you will enter and begin a spiral descent and underground guided tour along winding passageways and vast echoing caverns. Tours of Ruakuri Cave offer Waitomo's longest guided walking tour along 1.6km of cave passages where visitors marvel at the interesting formations in this living work of nature.

Tour Times:  9:00am, 10:00am, 11.30pm, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm daily.
