Available Activities:

One Way Ferry Crossing Bluff to/from Stewart Island

Stewart Island is perfect for a day excursion or an extended stay.  Travel from Bluff on board our modern express catamarans and experience Foveaux Strait in comfort and style while our friendly staff provide an informative commentary and point out highlights.

Duration: 1.5 hours

    • Wheelchair accessible (ferry only)

    • Vehicle parking available at Bluff Wharf Visitor Terminal (extra cost - reservations recommended)

Coach & Ferry Options from Invercargill, Queenstown or Te Anau
For visitors wishing to travel between Invercargill, Queenstown, Te Anau to Bluff, Real Journeys, in association with Tracknet, offers a daily coach transfer service, departing from Real Journeys Visitor Centres.  The coach connects with the 11am ferry departure from Bluff. The return coach transfer from Bluff delivers visitors back to the Real Journeys Visitor Centres in Invercargill, Queenstown or Te Anau.

Key Points:

  • Reservations are required
  • Luggage limit - two bags per person (one stowed and one small carry-on). Extra goods by arrangement
  • Coach & Ferry durations include ferry check in/disembarking
  • Coach transfer only operates during NZ summer months (from mid October to late April)
  • Pick up from Real Journeys Visitor Centres in Queenstown & Te Anau

Stewart Island Village and Bays Tour
Explore Oban and the surrounding bays in our modern mini-buses.  Gain an entertaining insight into the community, history and environment of Stewart Island.  Our guides enjoy sharing their local knowledge and there is pleny of time available for photo stops and short walks.

Duration: 1.5 hours


  • November to April, daily departures - 11.00am, 1.30pm & 4.00pm
  • May to October, daily departures - 11.00am & 1.00pm

Tours depart from the Oban Visitor Centre, next to the ferry terminal.


Stewart Island Marine Nature Cruise
Explore the coastal marine areas of Stewart Island and Titi Islands home to a diverse range of marine species both above and below water.  During the cruise, transfer to our semi-submersible with underwater viewing to see the rich marine life below the waterline.  The Titi Islands is a breeding ground for seals and great white sharks, so keep a look out for these and other wildlife including penguins, dolphins and albatross.

Duration: 2.5 hours

Daily Departures: Daily from November to March at 12.00pm from Stewart Island Visitor Terminal.

Key Points:

  • Suitable for adults and older children - not recommended for infants (0 - 4 years)
  • Picnic Lunch available (at additional cost and must be pre-ordered) and consists of sandwich, cheese and crackers, dried fruit, slice, fresh fruit and juice (dietary requirements available on request).
  • The excursion may vary due to sea and weather conditions and the opportunities to view wildlife.

Stewart Island Paterson Inlet Cruise
Enjoy a leisurely cruise of beautiful Paterson Inlet and visit the internationally acclaimed open wildlife sanctuary of Ulva Island.  See native bird life and plants flourishing in a predator-free environment on your guided walk. Then discover hidden coves and unspoilt beaches as you cruise further on to view the historic Whalers Base at Prices Inlet.  While on board, keep a lookout for fur seals, penguins and other wildlife, as sightings are common.

Duration: 2.5 hours

Daily Departures: October to April at 12.45pm from Stewart Island Visitor Terminal.

Stewart Island Evening Guided Walk

This small group guided walk takes clients by modern mini-van to Lee Bay where you will be taken on a guided walk along the start of the Rakiura Track as far as Little River.  Learn about the area’s conservation efforts and history from pre-European Maori times through to the early European industries of whaling, fishing, gold mining, timber milling and associated settlements, as well as the flora and birdlife along this spectacular piece of coast.  Headlamps are provided for the return walk.

Duration: 2 hours

Season:  November - March, daily departures

Departures: 6.00pm

Key Points:

  • Suitable for adults and older children - not suitable for infants
  • A reasonable standard of fitness is required.
