With its exciting, sometimes scandalous and tragic history, magnificent carved ceilings, New Zealand antiques and breathtaking views, Larnach Castle offers you a vision of the past and present. Today, the Castle is the home of the Barker family, who have spent over forty years lovingly restoring the building and recreating the beauty of the 14 hectares of gardens and grounds.

Location: 145 Camp Road, Dunedin.


Distance to Town: 12km


Operating Hours:

9am - 5pm (April to September)

9am - 7pm (October to March).


Closed: Christmas Day.


Food and Beverage: The Ballroom Cafe is open daily from 9.30am until 4.30pm for lunch and light refreshments.

The unique collections of specialised gardens at Larnach Castle have been rated by the New Zealand Gardens Trust as a Garden of International Significance. There is a Patterned Garden, the Lost Rock Garden, Serpentine Walk, South Seas Garden, Alice Lawn, Laburnym Arch, Green Room and the Rain Forest. To assist in exploring the gardens, a colour map is provided with features to be found.
