Help Notes


All Tranz Scenic trains are designated 'non smoking' services.

A range of light meals, refreshments and bar service are available for purchase on all trains.

Timetables shown are subject to change without notification. The train may depart intermediate stations earlier if all booked passengers are onboard. Passengers are advised to be at all stations at least 20 minutes before the time shown.



Tranz Scenic advises passengers to insure all baggage and personal items. Please remember to attach labels with your contact details at your destination.

Checked Baggage Allowance: 2 items per person, maximum weight 20 kg per item. Size must be no more than 200 linear cm (height plus length plus width).

Baggage between 20-30kg: we require your assistance in loading and unloading your bag from the baggage van or you can repack into bags provided to meet the 20kg per item limit.

Baggage over 30kg: will not be accepted, your baggage will need to be repacked into bags provided to meet the 20kg per item limit.

Extra Baggage (eg surfboard, bicycles) will be carried only if space is available at a cost of NZ$10 per item per service. Hazardous or offensive items will be rejected at check-in. Hand Baggage, which is obstructing passenger areas, will be moved to the baggage van.


Disabled Facilities

Ramps to assist passengers to board trains are available on all services if pre-advised. Some conventional wheelchairs may be too wide to fit through the doors of the carriage and down aisles. Passengers will be transferred to a Tranz Scenic wheelchair, their wheelchair will be stowed in the luggage van and they must be lifted into a seat on-board.

The TranzAlpine Train

Departing Christchurch and Greymouth

The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From your carriage you’ll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech rain forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth – a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always popular glaciers.

The TranzAlpine journey is an ideal weekend getaway or honeymoon vacation highlight. All carriages include both one way seating and tabled group seating allowing you to experience the amazing views while enjoying the company of other passengers on-board. An open air viewing carriage allows you to get even closer to the stunning scenery and provides many opportunities to photograph your favourite spots. There’s a lot to look forward to!

Our train journey sets off from Christchurch - New Zealand's largest city on the South Island. The trip is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 19 tunnels, and 4 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres.


Departs Christchurch - 8.15am, Arrives Greymouth - 12.45pm

Departs Greymouth - 1.45pm, Arrives Christchurch 6.05pm



The Northern Explorer Train

The Northern Explorer is a journey through the heart of the North Island, travelling between Auckland - New Zealand's largest city and home of the Sky Tower, to Wellington - New Zealand's arts and culture capital.

Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, popular with young and old alike. You also see fantastic views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges - all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views.

All carriages feature large panoramic windows giving sweeping views of the magnificent North Island. The Observation carriage includes a mix of seating including lounge style seating. The lounge style seating is arranged at the very rear of this glass backed carriage enabling you to enjoy a totally unique Overlander experience.


Departs Auckland - 7.50am, Arrives Wellington - 6.25am on a Monday, Thursday and Saturday excluding Wednesday

Departs Wellington - 7.55am, Arrives Auckland - 6.50pm on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday excluding Wednesday

The Coastal Pacific Train

The Coastal Pacific train journey travels between the delightful port of Picton and Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city. This journey is a scenic feast of New Zealand, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side of your train and the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline on the other. Along the way you pass though the village of Kaikoura, where, if you're touring New Zealand, you can break your journey to take in the whale watching or dare to get closer and swim with the dolphins.

Travel through some of New Zealand’s finest horticultural and farmland areas, and see amazing wildlife such as dolphins, seals and penguins from the comfort of your train carriage.

One of the world's most scenic train journeys, the Coastal Pacific travels through 22 tunnels and crosses 175 bridges. As on the TranzAlpine, the Coastal Pacific includes an open air viewing carriage where all your senses are awakened with the clean, fresh, sea air.

The Coastal Pacific will not operate over the winter months beginning Monday 6 May 2013.
