Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Lake Rotomahana were created on June 10 1886 by the Tarawera Eruption and are Rotorua's premier tourist attraction - a ‘must do’ eco-experience. Our exciting thermal attraction and sightseeing tours include unique ecology, rare botany and fascinating geothermal features such as steaming volcanic crater lakes.  


20 minute drive South of Rotorua or 40 minute drive North of Taupo.


Operating Hours:

8:30am to 5:00pm every day.


Food and Beverage:  

Cafe on site.


Transfers:  Not provided.  Rotorua Geyser Link Shuttle provide return transport from the i-SITE in central  Rotorua - with two pickups daily, at 8:45am and 1:00pm.


Child Ages:

6-16 years, under 6 years free of charge.

Help Notes:

Please wear flat shoes or sandals, comfortable clothing and bring your camera plus rain or sun protection as necessary.  For the advanced hiking option, good walking shoes with treaded soles are recommended.


At any stage of your walk you can take our courtesy shuttle bus, which regularly circles the valley, back to the Waimangu Visitor Centre.


People in wheelchairs must be accompanied by competent helpers.  Access to the Waimangu walking options and boat cruise is possible only for those visitors who can move or be moved in and out of their wheelchair for negotiating bus, jetty and boat steps.  Please note that Inferno Crater is accessed by 50 steps, the Mount Haszard Hiking trail in not wheelchair accessible and our shuttle buses do not have wheelchair lifts.

As you walk through the youngest eco-systems in the world you will view a range of geothermal activity, native plants and bird-life.  Walks range from 45 minutes  through this geothermal park to an extended 4 hours through the amazing Valley.

Waimangu Explorer - Valley Walk and Boat Cruise

Learn the history of Waimangu Volcanic Valley in even more depth with live commentary and guidesheet to the spectacular features of the valley walkway. The cruise takes the Explorer in a circle around this new lake, the deepest in the North Island.  The awesome volcanic landscape contrasts with calm waters and abundant bird life.

Tour times: 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:50pm, 1:30pm, 2:25pm and 3:15pm

Includes: Waimangu Wanderer Hiking and a 50 minute Rotomahana Voyager Boat Cruise.
