Now these limestone formations stand as one of New Zealand's most inspiring natural wonders and a must-see destination.  Discover magical glowworms by boat in the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Combine your experience with Ruakuri Cave; see glowworms up close and descend a spectacular spiral entrance. In Aranui Cave be mesmerised by ornate cave decorations.

Location: 2 hours drive south of Auckland and 1 hours drive south of Hamilton. 


Operating Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm. Aranui and Ruakuri caves Closed Christmas Day.

Food and Beverage: Restaurant and Cafe at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves visitor centre. 


Child Ages: 0-14 years, under 4 years free of charge.

Help Notes:

  • Bring comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket.
  • Ruakuri cave is wheelchair accessible.
  • The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are accessible to those with reasonable mobility, with good handrails and paths, there is no wheelchair access.
  • Aranui Cave does not have wheelchair access and is therefore not suitable for visitors with mobility problems.

Available Activities:
Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Your guided tour will take you through over 250 metres of stunning underground scenery commencing with the impressive Cathedral. The acoustics in this particular cavern are world-renowned. Your tour begins at the upper entrance of the cave and proceeds along a low narrow passage to the Tomo, a deep limestone shaft.  The highlight of your tour is an unrivalled boat trip through the spectacular Glowworm Grotto.  

Opening Times: 9:00am - 5:00pm daily

Departures: Every half hour

Duration:  Approximately 45 minutes

Aranui Caves

A guide will take you along safe boardwalks into narrow chambers to see the finest cave formations of all the caves in Waitomo. The high chambers, magnificent limestone formations and the pale brown, pink and white shades of the huge stalactites are truly spectacular.  Aranui cave is home to one of the largest stalactites, which is estimated to be 2.5 tonnes and 6 metres long. 

Tour Times:  10:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm daily, bookings essential

Duration:  Approximately 45 minutes

Two Cave Visit - Ruakuri and Waitomo Caves

Deep underground in the heart of the Waikato are a series of unique caves that will take your breath away. Ruakuri Cave is home to an innovative spiral entrance, echoing waterfalls and limestone that flow into delicate shawl-like formations. Nearby, at the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, thousands of tiny glow worms cling to the cave ceiling, creating a starry sky within the underground night. You will also see a deep limestone shaft and a soaring subterranean cathedral that will leave you speechless.  

Tour Times:  Ruakuri Cave must be pre-booked; however, tours run every half hour through the Waitomo Glowworm Caves during opening hours.
